Our Story

Back in 1983, Buffets, Inc. was founded by two gentlemen - Roe Hatlen and C. Dennis Scott. After building a thriving buffet restaurant chain together, Dennis Scott left in 1989 to start HomeTown Buffet. In September 1996, Buffets, Inc. and HomeTown Buffet, Inc. were merged. Together, we're now the nation's thirteenth largest restaurant chain. As of Oct. 1, 2004, Buffets, Inc. and its affiliated companies operated 376 restaurants in 37 states including 176 Old Country Buffets, 168 HomeTown Buffets, 1 Granny's Buffet, 1 Soup 'n Salad, and 1 Country Roadhouse Buffet and Grill restaurant.

Our buffet restaurants utilize a 'scatter' buffet system that allows for a wide selection of food and easier access than traditional buffets. Our focus is traditional 'home cooking' which includes carefully prepared salads, soups, entrees and desserts. We strive to provide a relaxing and enjoyable dining experience in a friendly, family-oriented atmosphere. Our complete meals include beverage and dessert for one low price. We serve lunch and dinner daily and most of our restaurants offer weekend breakfast.

The quality of our food stands apart from other restaurants in the buffet category. This is achieved through our commitment to using only the only fresh, high quality ingredients in our salads, made-from-scratch soups, entrees and, of course, our delicious desserts. Unlike other buffet restaurants, we prepare our food at continual intervals throughout the day and serve it in small quantities (enough to feed 8 to 12 guests). Some of our recipes have been passed down within our families.

Our success is also due in great part to our dedicated staff. Both Old Country Buffet and HomeTown Buffet managers attend 'The College' located at the Buffets, Inc. headquarters in Eagan, Minnesota. In 'college' our managers learn the importance of quality control and restaurant management to ensure that we remain a leader in the restaurant industry. Our continued growth speaks to the fact that we do deliver outstanding value, variety, and good quality food.

In addition to close to 400 buffet restaurants, Buffets, Inc. and its subsidiaries also operate a steakhouse restaurant chain. Tahoe Joe's is known for its Sierra Mountain Dining, high quality and relaxing atmosphere. As of Oct. 1, 2004 there are 9 locations in California, located in Fresno (2), Bakersfield, Vacaville, Modesto, Roseville, Folsom, Pleasant Hills, and San Luis Obispo.
